Earth Observation from Space: Deep Learning Based Satellite Image Analysis

In this webinar, we will address the challenge of land use and land cover classification using remote sensing satellite images.

Based on Sentinel-2 satellite images provided within the scope of the Earth observation program Copernicus, Damian will share his experience with using state-of-the-art Convolutional Neural Network (CNNs) on different spectral bands. He will share how deep learning led to a novel dataset with an overall classification accuracy of 98.57%. This classification system will open the gate for a number of Earth observation applications, and can be used for detecting land use or land cover changes as well as assisting in improving geographical maps.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:
  1. How Deep Learning opens the gate for several new Earth observation applications
  2. How you can use publicly available datasets for land use and land cover analysis
  3. How the developed classification model can be used for detecting land use or land cover

Dr. Damian Borth
Director, Deep Learning Competence Center

Dr. Damian Borth is the Director of the Deep Learning Competence Center at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern and the Principle Investigator of the NVIDIA AI Lab at the DFKI. Damian‘s research focuses on large-scale multimedia opinion mining applying machine learning and, in particular, deep learning to mine insights from online media streams. Damian currently serves as a member of the steering group at the “Volkswagen Stiftung”, the review committee at the Baden-Wurttemberg Stiftung, the assessment committee for the Investment Innovation Benchmark (IIB) and several other steering- and program committees of international conferences and workshops. He is also a founding member the Financial Data Science Association and scientific director of the Certified Financial Data Science Program at “Deutsche Vereinigung für Finanzanalyse und Asset Management (DVFA)”. Damian did his postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley and the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) in Berkeley. He received his PhD from the University of Kaiserslautern and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). During that time, Damian stayed as a visiting researcher at the Digital Video and Multimedia Lab at Columbia University.
